Tangent Production Documents

So I am lazy to make BTS of Tangent The Short Movie. LOL... I will make it someday... I will *procrastinating...

So in this post, I will make Production Documents of that movie, writing is a lot easier than editing the movie though :p.

It will cover, how can I come up with such a wonderful idea, how I finally finished it, and any rant that I want to say LOL.

I will divide it in three section, Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production *so generic uh?

Pre-Production

So how can I come up with this Idea?
Well... actually I remember that there is a Short Movie Competition 2 weeks before the deadline. So yeah, if you can say it, the movie is finished in 2 weeks only.
I know it's not much time, so I start right away. I need to think of some story. Not a complicated amazing story but a simple story, simple to watch, and more important is simple to produce. Then I don't thought the story first, I thought about the storytelling first, how the movie will be told. *because I believe being a director, it's about storytelling.

So I didn't focus on the story, I focus on the storytelling, it's include why I choose it's a first person view for all of the story. Because it's unique, not many film using that thing, so it can be a trademark for this movie~...

Next thing because the deadline is near, I don't want to make the shooting complicated, so I will make a silent movie *so we don't need to record dialog which is need shotgun mic. And the other reason is I want to shoot it in guerilla style *not gorilla style, it's a different thing ==a...*

And because of that, I make the main character deaf, so he can't hear such a thing and make sense to the story LOL. And I come to other problem, so how can he communicates? And I learn that sign language on internet, take me 3 days to learn the basics. And then I realize, if I use that, then the audience doesn't have a clue what that is *damn*. So I use that very little and use text base language LOL.

The story thing, I just wanna say that what do you think love is? Is it really means something to you, or it is just a status? And I just wanna say when you apart with someone, it's better if you aren't cry because of it, but grateful every moment that you have past with them and grateful that you have seen them once in a lifetime. *because I usually saw a couple that breaks up ending not really well, and may not talk to each other for a long time, what happen to you guys? ._. *well I don't really have that feeling because I haven't had one. *Asia, I feel you brah~...

Oh btw, the competition I am in need a theme in movie that we submitted. It is "A message to Asia". And I thought, what a lame theme... LOL *sorry*. So I want to take it literally, so... yeah... the name of the character is Asia, and the one part of the story is about... yeah... message / communication... to Asia *LOL*. *and this is a reason to why I make the character deaf.

The first title I came up with is like "Crossroad" or something like that. But I stumbleupon this thing.

And yeah... that thing change my mind about the title. And now, many people asks "What is Tangent?" :v
Just several people realize the meaning of the title though ._.

And the hard thing to make the story is make a feeling that love is in the air... in a short time... and to make it believable. Some people get the wrong idea that the girl confess her feeling to the boy, well she didn't say "I love you" or such a thing. She just want to be a couple with the boy for one day. She want to have fun, feel the romantic thing, just for one day before she go, it doesn't mean she likes him. And this is the problem that I stated before, What do you think love is? When she asks him "Do you think love is sacred?". She is unsure, if the boy says yes, I think the girl won't say anything about being a couple. But he didn't answer the exact yes/no answer, he answered that he didn't know it. So she takes a chance. The girl just thinks being a couple is just a status only, so it doesn't matter if it take one year, one month, or even one day only, because the sake of being a couple, and feeling the romantic feeling.

Ah but that's only my justification though :p, that's what I have in my mind when I write the story, if you have your own interpretation, sure go ahead, the movie is not supposed to understand what I am thinking, but the main focus is the audience can feel the movie and relate to them.

And the second part hardest thing is... how to make the girl goes away. I think about several possible scene, she dies from cancer *oh good damn cliche*, she gets hit by car *sinetron sigh*, she is actually a boy *oh my*. And I ended up she will go to another city. It's a cliche, but not really that cliche. But then I need a good reason why she gone. And I use the same reason why the boy came to the city *haha it's kinda clever enough, though not many audience realize it*.

So how about any other thing beside the story?
There is almost nothing about another thing. I just think about the location, the location must be a easy place to shoot and one place that kinda special for dating place. I choose park, actually at the first time I want to make it in Ancol Theme Park *so I can get a footage that we ride the roller coaster whooo!!!*, but later I change it to Seaworld.
And I decided to use small compact camera, so no one will expect us shooting on the place without permit *hahaha *evil grin*.
And I choose the date, the hardest thing, because more people in your production, the less date we can choose because I must make sure that everyone is free on the day. So I choose to make a small production team, so I still can take control what going to happen.

And yeah, I made the sketch of the girl. Takes times though. Done it in Chinese New Year ._.

And pre-production takes time about one week I guess :-?. Because I was busy with something back then and it takes that many time ._.

Production

What do you do on set?Being actor.
Yups I'm the main actor... ==a... *limited budget brah~...
But sometimes the DoP be the actor.
When I was the actor, I may hold the camera in my left hand and do anything with my right hand. Or if I need my both hand my DoP hold it for me. Well actually, I don't make any shotlist, because, you know, it's all PoV, so you can guess, it's an eyelevel medium shot, and always moving. And it makes the DoP doesn't have many thing to do *and I feel bad about that*.
The nice thing about silent movie is, I can direct when the camera is rolling LOL. It's really good thing and speed up the production.

And I don't take many takes, because I don't focus on perfection, I focus on quantity of shot that I can choose later, especially when dating scene. And as a director, I don't understand why many director really care about the perfection of the shot, like track there, and zoom, and pull focus, do dialog, in one time without a cut and do it perfectly rather than cut up the shot. As the audience, I don't really care about that, it seems same, and we don't take account how hard it is. But if you are studying about film production, sure that makes thing different, but still we just appreciate it from production value, not actual how the scene feels.

The shoot day takes 3 or 4 days I guess *I kinda forget about it, I don't take a note about it*. In first day we take the dating scene part, and the other day, we take in school, in mall and my apartment.

Funny thing, when we record the chatting part, it's not really the girl who chat with the main character, it's my man that doing it. LOL *sorry guys to tear apart your imagination.
We yell across the room to say what to chat, it's kinda hilarious, I think I still have the raw footage with sound what we actually doing.

Post-Production

What are you doing in post production?
Well, I edit the movie my self ._.
So you can see that I'm jack of all trades here ._., because I need small crew to make this production swift.
I edit it in 3 days I guess :-?...
I rough cut it, add filter to blur the edge of the image, it's kinda tricky to doing this because there isn't any filter that will instantly do this thing in Premiere.
And for the transition, 'eye-thingy', I make it manually, animate it manually to close in two frame and open in two frame, it's not automated, and it worn my hand D:. And many people got dizzy to watch it @.@... *my mom say that she want to throw up after watch this movie D:... LOL...
And add a cheap color correction, I decided to make it warm if it's happy or excited, and cool if it's sad or alone. And... no one notice that... haha... orz *bitter laugh*.

What a cool music! Where can I download it?
Well it's made by our actress, the girl that act in the movie and some others. She scores the piano, with my direction of course~... *although I don't know really much about the music, I just feel it, and give direction feeling base... I don't know is it a helpful thing or it's just bug the creative side of the composer ._.
And my other friend does the string section of the music, and another does the mixing *I really have no idea what is he doing, but yeah, I think the music slightly different and nice to hear.
We do it in 1 day... before the deadline... We do it in hurry and my care about the music is zero, I don't care about the quality, I care about it finishes in time... ._. *so this is how someone judgement changed in critical time*

Afterwards

We succeed to submit the movie in time, that's a good thing. And I got a compliment from the judges *grin*, I didn't really expect that, but yeah, I am happy to hear that :D. And we won the First Runner Up (Second Place) *Yay!!!*...
It's kinda amazing that this movie has won the First Runner Up looking on the budget and time constraint, but I think it proves that low budget movie can be good~... ahahay~...

And then one of the judges *outside of competition room* suggests me to include my movie to another festival, and I think why not, but I need to make several revision to my movie, because I made it in a hurry, so now I can take time to fine tune the edit.

And that is kill me. I procrastinate, because there is no deadline... it takes more than one month to finish the edit and submit it to Europe on Screen and upload it to Youtube. *I can take a moral value here, if you think your movie is finish, it's finish, don't think to revise it! Ever!*
And that is what you all see... the edit I think it's better, I revise the pacing. And we score the music from the beginning referring to original scoring. It's a little bit different *in some part, I like the original better than the new one, but then I think the music is not the focus of the movie though*.

And that is the journey of the movie :-?... *it's kinda long huh? ._.
And I stil wait for the EoS nomination for this movie, hope this movie will get it.

And by the way thanks to have read all the way down here. I tip my hat to you~... XD

ciao~...
